For templates check out cardboard checklists, concentrates on the critical path items. Methods123.com more for templates and processes. Project smart and program control.com both offer free templates and downloads.
Scheduling is a big part of project management. My favorites Milestones, Fasttrack Schedule 8.0 and conceptdraw project. These programs allow for the creation and expansion of Gantt and pert charts and they can be configured to fit your every need.
Web 2.0 based projects are becoming the popular connection. With programs like BPS Project. You can bring the world to you. Literally. This program allows for a live real time enviroment.You choose who has what access to all documents, schedules and project status. Erealize offers understanding on how people fit into the project. It also allows for complex method solving all courtesy of the web. Think of the travel time and the money a business can save using either of these technologies
These are only a few of the services available so start investigating. I am sure you will find something to fit your business and personnel needs.
Free programs are on the rise for all fields. I decided to concentrate on project management this go around.
The first application is minuteman 7.4a This program allows you to create a project schedule with milestones, make notes on each task, assign individuals responsibility, track expenses, create Gnatt and PERT charts, schedule and budget all within the program. You can also create hard copy's using word and spreadsheet programs. Everything can be sent via email.
For the smaller company try Scadex project tracker 4.1. claims to fame: all things track able including time cards, suppliers, purchases, employees, estimating and it contains a database. Can be exported to Microsoft Project.
Z Planner Agenda 1.0 is all about time-management features include task breakdown and automatic scheduling. This program is more of a home based application.
Mindjet MindManager Pro 7.1- Free to try expensive to buy. This is more of a mind-mapping software. Uses brainstorming as a main component to increase planning. There are a ton of templates to help ease the transition. Used by fortune 500 companies.
Smartworks-projecr reader is ideal for sending information to a client. They can read and access however, they cannot change the information provided. I see many defaults with this however, for the legal professional it maybe great.
Not all software has to be be about projects. I found Methods Project management Assessment- This is an interactive assessment that helps you manage a project, analyzes your answers, keeps score and even gives you recommendations for improvement. It's pretty cool
The latest discovery in my search for all things project management, I have found a wonderful site full of FREE downloads. I do not mean a trail version, the full version. There are some you can purchase at a reduced price also.
You can go to www.download.com and enter your topic, don't be surprised by the vast amount of information you will receive. The topics listed are by the service you have examples windows,mac,mobile devices,web ware, games and music. Once you choose a topic go to the search and enter your desired field, mine was project management but this site offers everything form e-commerence to utilities.
My initial search came back with 1008 results. Yes, they were all there. Some I have mentioned before, others I have not experimented with yet. This site also allows you to see the total number of times a particular version has been downloaded and updated.

I have began working with www.basecamphq.com it provides a wide array of collaboration tools for both internal and external projects. The i-cal( a calender for any organization freak) allows for your schedule to be posted and anyone needing to set up a time to accept a spot. This is an invitation site that allows file sharing, time tracking, to do lists and it is all ran off of the dashboard. One can coordinate schedules with all team members, keep track of data when your out of the office, advise and communicate with contractors and consultants. Create workshops and seminars.
This tool seems to be broad based. It offers programs for Ad agencies, architects, web designers, publishers & authors, study groups, associations, real estate agents, accountants,project management. You get the drift. Anyone you can think of can benefit from basecamp.
There are two options when you set up a project, active or archived. Once a project is achieved you can no longer edit it. Another great feature is the SSL or the Secure Socket Layer. Simply put any data sent from your computer to basecamp is encrypted for your businesses private needs. This site allows 50 GB of space for files, and you can have unlimited clients and users. Total aggregate time is another outstanding feature that allows you to run reports in any area.
They offer a free 30 day trial as long as you subscribe to one of the three packages ranging from $49 - $149. This includes a free real-time chat tool for businesses. It is kind of like IM but in a business setting. So basically you are getting a two for one deal.
